Amalfi is one of the cities on the Amalfi Coast and is precisely the one that gives its name to this beautiful part of the Italian coast.

It is one of the most important cities on the Amalfi Coast and has an ancient history. Amalfi was the first of the four great Italian Maritime Republics and, for several centuries, competed against Genoa and Pisa for dominance of the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Without a doubt, the height of Amalfi’s splendor was between the 9th and 11th centuries. However, in 1135, it was sacked and destroyed by Pisa, and then its decline began. Amalfi managed to maintain its independence for another two centuries, until it became part of the Kingdom of Naples.

But leaving history aside, here are some tips on what to do in Amalfi in one day.

What to see in Amalfi

Like all the cities on the Amalfi Coast, Amalfi is very small, so it is possible to see the basics in a few hours’ tour. For this reason, you will find several tour options that include Amalfi along with Ravello and Positano.

Obviously, to get to know the city well and enjoy everything it has to offer, you need to spend at least three days. But if you don’t have all that time to spare, then check out my tips on what to do on a trip lasting just a few hours.

1. Discover the Amalfi Duomo and the Cloister of Paradise

When you walk from the port to Amalfi’s main square, the Cattedrale di Sant’Andrea immediately catches your eye. This Arabic-Norman style cathedral dates back to the 9th century, but the one we see is not entirely original. Due to a landslide that occurred in the last century, it had to be rebuilt.

Still, the door (made in Constantinople in 1066) and some capitals are original pieces.

From the Duomo it is possible to go to the Chiostro del Paradiso, a cemetery that was built in 1266 for the city’s illustrious characters. There you will find paintings from the 13th and 14th centuries and it is a beautiful place where you can escape the crowds for a while.

2. Shop for crafts

Amalfi is a wonderful place to just wander around and watch the world go by. Although it is common to find groups of tourists standing in the middle of the street making it difficult to pass, it is a really peaceful place.

Without a doubt, Amalfi is a great place to shop, as there are many irresistible boutiques, ateliers and craft stores.

From souvenirs to white cotton dresses, handcrafted jewelry to hand-painted ceramics: there’s something for everyone, perfect for taking home as souvenirs from the Amalfi Coast.

3. Eat a sweet treat at Pasticceria Pansa

Pasticceria Pansa is located next to the Duomo steps. This confectionery was opened in 1830 by Andrea Pansa, a master confectioner from Amalfi.

Although it has been almost 200 years since its opening, the business has been passed down from generation to generation, maintaining excellent quality in the production of its delicious sweets, biscuits, candied fruits and chocolates.

Furthermore, Pasticceria Pansa has a strong connection to its own territory and uses mainly local products, such as lemons from the Amalfi Coast and various dried fruits and fruits typical of Campania.

Recently, Pasticceria Pansa was awarded a star from World Pastry Stars, which is a great recognition in the world of confectionery. Good to know: Pansa’s menu is printed on Carta di Amalfi, Amalfi paper.

4. Visit the Amalfi Paper Museum

The Amalfi Paper Museum (in Italian, Museo della Carta) enchants with the presence of old machines still in perfect working order. It’s very interesting, as it is an interactive visit that involves the production of a handmade sheet of paper from start to finish.

In the past in Amalfi there were numerous paper factories that, exploiting the driving force of the Canneto River, produced the specific type of Amalfi paper that is now very popular for wedding invitations or large events.

Although the number of paper mills has drastically reduced, Amalfi paper remains well known in Italy and abroad. To give you an idea, the Vatican still uses it in its correspondence!

5. Get lost in the alleys of Amalfi

Amalfi is made up of small houses perched on top of each other that rise along the hills. If on the one hand the city is bathed by the sea, on the other it is protected by the Lattari mountains.

So, as there isn’t much “space” in Amalfi, it is full of picturesque alleys and alleys. Therefore, one of the coolest things to do there is to walk around without following a map, just admiring the landscape.

Every now and then you will come across something quite peculiar. For example, there is an ancient font called “Fontana de cape ‘e ciucci”, which means “fountain of donkey heads”. The reason for the name is because in the past, pack donkeys stopped there to drink water.

Nowadays, the fountain is famous for its half-submerged, half-outdoor nativity scene, which can be admired all year round. In addition to the nativity scene, the heads of the two men placed on the sides that function as fountains are also peculiar.

6. Drink limoncello or something with lemon

Amalfi is famous for its lemons, a lemon called “limone sfusato”. It has an intense aroma, very thick yellow skin, but with a soft pulp.

Therefore, when walking around Amalfi, you will see lemons (and limoncello!) everywhere. Be sure to try it and take a bottle home!

7. Stroll on the Lungomare dei Cavalieri

Whether you arrived by sea or by land, your starting or exit point will be Piazza Flavio Gioia and the Lungomare dei Cavalieri, as this is where the large parking lot and the pier are located.

The sea is the soul of this city, with which it has always had a deep connection, as it was a maritime power!
