St. Peter’s Square
St. Peter’s Square rebuilt and redesigned thanks to Gian Lorenzo Bernini between 1656 and 1667.
It is an ancient square in the center of Vatican City. The structure is believed to have been built on the site where the apostle Saint Peter was killed. Both St. Peter’s Basilica and St. Peter’s Square are named after the apostle, who was considered the first Pope.
As an important landmark in the city, this open space hosts a number of religious and cultural events throughout the year, including the Papal Audience. Every year, millions of people visit the Square to honor the history of Saint Peter, to participate in events or simply to admire its magnificence.
Pantheon
We will continue to the second stop, the Pantheon. A symbol of pagan and polytheistic antiquity, the Pantheon in Rome, or Pantheon, as the Italians call it, is the best-preserved ancient monument in the Eternal City. Also a symbol of ancient rituals and beliefs, it was erected in honor of not one, but “All the Gods” by Marcus Agrippa, between 27 BC and 25 BC, during the reign of Augustus.
One of the most famous tourist attractions in Rome, the Pantheon has more than 2 thousand years of history and is famous for the peculiar architecture of its dome, which has gigantic proportions, without supporting columns.
Furthermore, at its summit there is an opening of around 9 meters in diameter (the oculus) and, even so, it does not allow rainwater to wet the interior of this magnificent work of Italian engineering, used for centuries.
Stroll through Piazza Navona, built on the ancient stadium of Diocletian that was used for athletic competitions. Today you can admire the Fountain of the Four Rivers, the Fountain of Neptune and the Church of Saint Agnes in Agony in Navona square.
Colosseum
The stop you can’t miss is the Colosseum (Flavian Amphitheatre), you will travel along the Fori Imperiali to Piazza Venezia where you can admire the Vittoriano and the balcony from which Benito Mussolini declared the Second World War against France and Great Britain.
Soon after, Via del Corso, we will take you to the Trevi Fountain, by Nicola Salvi. The artist was responsible for building the fountain in the 18th century after winning a competition organized by Pope Clement XII.
Then, your driver will accompany you to Piazza Spagna, where you can admire the famous Spanish Steps and Pietro Bernini’s La Barcaccia Fountain, continuing to Piazza del Popolo and its obelisk.
The tour will end at 15:30 / 16:00, when we will return to the Port of Civitavecchia. You will be ready to board and continue your cruise vacation at around 5pm.
