POMPEII
Pompeii is a place where time has stopped since 79 AD. Since that fateful day when the cataclysmic eruption of Mount Vesuvius rained tons of ash and lava onto the Roman city, the site remained buried in a perfectly preserved state until excavations began in the 18th century. What was revealed is today one of the most fascinating and frequented attractions in Italy.
In the ruins of Pompeii you will learn the technique of pouring liquid plaster into the empty spaces of lava to recreate the body shapes that once filled the voids. This way we can see what the residents were doing at the time of the eruption.
As you wander the streets of the ancient city with your guide, you’ll follow in the footsteps of the Romans who lived there nearly 2,000 years ago, among the public baths, temples, markets, and forums. The buildings are nothing short of intriguing and some of the houses still retain their original marble decoration, well-preserved frescoes and splendid mosaics.
SOME OF THE PLACES TO SEE IN POMPEII
HOUSE OF THE FAUN
The so-called “House of the Faun” is one of the largest houses in all of Pompeii, occupying approximately 3000m². Needless to say, it was owned by a very wealthy family, right? The opulence can be seen not only in its size but also in details that remain unchanged to this day, such as the marble mosaics on the floor, the capitals of its columns, etc. Its name comes from the faun statue found there during excavations. A copy is kept to this day inside the house, while the original is on display at the National Archaeological Museum in Naples.
HOUSE OF VETTII
It is one of the richest and most famous houses in Pompeii. It was owned by the brothers Aulus Vettius Restitutus and Aulus Vettius Conviva, two very wealthy merchants. Right at the entrance, you can see the painting of Priapus, the God of prosperity – symbolizing the fortune acquired by its owners. The garden is its main attraction, with several statues.
HOUSE OF THE TRAGIC POET
This house brings with it two curiosities (and, not least, it is one of the main points of interest during visits to Pompeii): the first is the mosaic at its entrance – forming the drawing of a dog plus the inscription Cave Canem (which means “beware of the dog”). The second is the fact that it served as inspiration for the novel The Last Days of Pompeii, by English writer Edward Bulwer-Lytton.
BASILICA
The Basilica of Pompeii was, without a doubt, one of the places that most enchanted me during the tour. No accident. With around 1500m², it was the most imposing building in the entire city. And, despite the suggestion of the name, it was not used for religious rites, but for legal purposes. The construction dates back to 130-120 BC.
TEMPLE OF JUPITER
Located on the north face of the Forum of Pompeii, the Temple of Jupiter enchants by perfectly framing Mount Vesuvius. It is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful spots in the entire city and, as expected, it attracts the attention of 10 out of 10 tourists who pass by.
SANCTUARY OF APOLLO
The sanctuary of Apollo is considered one of the oldest temples in Pompeii. The initiative to build a sanctuary dedicated to this God dates back to the periods in which the city was under the rule of the Greeks and Etruscans. It is estimated that it was completely remodeled between the 2nd and 3rd centuries BC. Although it is not in an excellent state of conservation, the visit gives us an idea of how imposing it once was.
POMPEI AMPHITHEATER
Historians claim that this is the oldest known Roman amphitheater. It was built in 70 BC and could accommodate up to 20 thousand spectators. Often, inhabitants of neighboring cities traveled to Pompeii just to watch the events taking place there. Even today you can see frescoes of gladiators on its walls. Anyone who is a fan of Pink Floyd has one more reason to visit the Amphitheater: the emblematic “Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii” was recorded there. Along the halls of the arena, there is an exhibition about the band, with photographs and films taken during the recording, as well as records of later shows that David Gilmour played there.
